چکیده
The influence of zirconium on the grain refinement of Al 6063 alloy has been experimentally investigated. The microstructure and macrostructure of the refined alloy were investigated. The experimental results reveal that, the coarse dendrites in the microstructure of the alloy are effectively refined with the addition of zirconium to the melt prior to solidification. Grains of Al 6063 alloy can be refined from 256 μm to 95 μm via addition of 0.2 wt. % Zr at holding time 90 seconds. The grain refinement effect of zirconium is found to be due to addition of zirconium to the melt in the form of master alloy introduces Al3Zr particles which are effective nucleating sites for the primary aluminium phase.

EFFECT OF COOLING RATE AND GRAIN REFINEMENT ON THE MICROSEGREGATION IN Al-4.8 wt.% Cu ALLOY
Microsegregation is one of the most important phenomena occurs during solidification. It usually results in formation of some unexpected second phases which generally affect the mechanical properties and specially reduce the workability of casting products. The aim of this research is to study the effect of cooling rate and grain refinement on the microsegregation in Al-4.8 wt.% Cu. For this p...

Control of microstructure parameters that affecting the Al-Ti-C master alloys grain refining efficiency is leading to improve the aluminum grain refinement. This study was an attempt to produce Al-Ti-C master alloys that provide these controlling factors with relying on the solute effect theory. The produced master alloys were examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispers...
متن کاملGrain Refinement and Enhancement of Mechanical Properties of Hot Extruded Rare-Earth Containing Magnesium Alloy
The effects of rare earth addition and hot extrusion process on the grain refinement of magnesium alloy were studied. The as-cast Mg-6Al-1Zn (AZ61) alloy had the average grain size of ~ 64 µm and its microstructure consisted of α-Mg and Mg17Al12 phase. By partial substitution of Al with Gd to reach Mg-4.8Gd-1.2Al-1Zn alloy, it was observed that the Mg17Al12 phase disappeared and two new interme...

The effect of pre-existing nano sized precipitates on the mechanisms and rate of grain refinement has been investigated during the severe plastic deformation. A binary Al–0.2Sc alloy, containing coherent Al3Sc particles, of 3.62 nm in diameter has been deformed by accumulative roll bonding up to 10 cycles. The resulting deformed structures were quantitatively analyzed using electron backscatter...
متن کاملThe Weldability and Grain Refinement of AI-2.2Li-2.7Cu
The basic weldability of the alloy Al-2.2Li-2.7Cu was investigated and compared with two common aluminum alloys: 2024 and 5083. The basic weldability was characterized by the susceptibility of the alloy to hot tearing as determined by the trans-Varestraint test. The hot tearing susceptibility was characterized through plots of total crack length and maximum crack length versus augmented strain....
